PB&J Curricula

Our curricula exceed the Tennessee Early Learning Development Standards. Because children learn differently, we employ two teaching methods:

Rocket Reading
(for one-year-olds )

The one-year-olds have weekly themes and associated activities, e.g., balls, shoes, socks, hands, ribbons, paper, boxes and many more. If theme is balls, balls of all shapes and sizes are available in free play.

boyreading

The children paint with balls, wash balls in the water center, bounce, roll, and throw balls outside, read stories about balls, and experiment to see which ball fits in the tube. All of the Tennessee Developmental Standards are addressed through play and exploration.

Rocket Reading
(for two-, three-, four- and five-year-olds)

The school directors, Jennifer Walker and Brooke Pate, designed this curriculum, which is a highly systematic approach to reading instruction. Children are taught that sounds are represented by letters, and that sounds and letters follow a sequence that allows children to read words early on. Research shows that systematic and early instruction in phonics leads to better reading. The second aspect of the curriculum is “thematic units.” For example, when the children are learning the letter “I” sound, threes will learn about instruments, the fours about insects and the fives about inchworms. Each unit includes the following:

• Vocabulary • Phonics • Expressive Language • Receptive Language

• Literature • Math • Science • Social Studies • Creative Arts

• Physical Development • Outdoor Education • Cooking

Parents receive a copy of the curriculum that details what their child will learn for the year, as well as weekly and monthly notices that describe which skills are being taught.

Fine Arts and Spanish Instruction

Each class receives 30 minutes a day of Fine Arts/Spanish instruction. Because children learn languages through immersion, the Spanish language is incorporated throughout the period. This class is taught by Becca McVay, who holds a degree in art and is bilingual.

Enrichment Classes

Research has demonstrated that when children are exposed to certain subjects at an early age, dramatic effects can be made on the child’s brain development. We’re currently offering the following enrichment classes:

• Art....• Music....Taekwondo....Rocket Reading....Science

Math....Spanish....Design & Build....• Cooking

Classes subject to change. Please click here for more details on PB&J Enrichment Classes.

Summer Camp

PB&J Day School offers a wonderful array of creative summer camp experiences for children aged 1-12. Please click here for dates and details.

“My daughter surprises me every day with the new information she has learned. My daughter loves to coming to school. As soon as we get in the parking lot, she starts laughing. I know that she is well taken care of and loved by the teachers and staff.”

"Excellent learning environment - obvious by looking at the school infrastructure; talking to the teachers (always smiling!); and interaction with my child at day's end - always something to share."
