PB&J Day School Programs & Curricula
Our curricula exceed the Tennessee Early Learning Development Standards. Because children learn differently, we employ two teaching methods:
Rocket Reading (for one-year-olds )
The one-year-olds have weekly themes and associated activities, e.g., balls, shoes, socks, hands, ribbons, paper, boxes and many more. If theme is balls, balls of all shapes and sizes are available in free play. boyreading The children paint with balls, wash balls in the water center, bounce, roll, and throw balls outside, read stories about balls, and experiment to see which ball fits in the tube. All of the Tennessee Developmental Standards are addressed through play and exploration.
Rocket Reading (for two-, three-, four- and five-year-olds)
The school directors, Jennifer Walker and Brooke Pate, designed this curriculum, which is a highly systematic approach to reading instruction. Children are taught that sounds are represented by letters, and that sounds and letters follow a sequence that allows children to read words early on. Research shows that systematic and early instruction in phonics leads to better reading. For the second "i" sound, threes will learn about instruments, the fours about insects and the fives about inchworms. Each unit includes the following:
Vocabulary
Phonics
Expressive Language
Receptive Language
Parents receive a copy of the curriculum that details what their child will learn for the year, as well as weekly and monthly notices that describe which skills are being taught.
TouchMath
TouchMath is a multi-sensory program that uses its signature "TouchPoints" to engage students of all abilities and learning styles. This award-winning, step-by-step approach covers: counting, addition, subtraction, place value, multiplication, division, time, money, fractions, story problems, shapes, sizes and more. TouchMath has been proven to raise math test scores in classrooms around the world for over three decades. Use this intuitive system as a supplement to any curriculum or as a stand-alone program. It makes math easy!
Math, Music & Movement
Music is a very natural part of a child’s life before school and provides the context for exploring math's components. Nursery rhymes and lullabies capture childrens' attention and provoke a fascination with music and the patterns embedded in them. Exposure to and experiences with music and movement feeds children’s developing mathematical concepts and skills of classification, comparison, ordering, measuring, counting, special awareness and graphing. This class is taught by Brooke Pate.
Artes Creativas: Fine Arts and Spanish Instruction
Each class receives 30 minutes a day of Fine Arts/Spanish instruction. Because children learn languages through immersion, the Spanish language is incorporated throughout the period. This class is taught by Jennifer Walker.
